Why Skylights and Bay Windows Need Specialty Care

Skylights and bay windows are some of the most beautiful features in any Austin home — and some of the most neglected. Skylights collect leaves, pollen, bird droppings, and roof grit that gets washed into the well during every rainstorm. Within a year of installation, even a perfect skylight can look hazy and yellowed from the inside as a thin film of grime builds up on both surfaces. Cleaning them yourself usually means climbing onto your roof, which is dangerous, and trying to clean the interior with an extension pole, which rarely works.

Bay and bow windows project out from the home, which makes them magnets for dust, spider webs, and water spotting along the joints between panes. The angles also make them awkward to squeegee — most homeowners can clean the center pane but leave the angled side panes streaky. Garden windows (the small greenhouse-style windows over kitchen sinks) are even trickier because of the shelving inside and the awkward outside reach.
